Villarrica lies in the Araucanía region of southern Chile, on the western shore of Lake Villarrica, where the Toltén River begins its course toward the Pacific. On a map, the lake fills the east, a wide shape with a gently curving shoreline, and the town spreads back from it in a fairly regular grid across rising ground.
Across the lake to the southeast stands Villarrica volcano, also known by its Mapuche name Rucapillán and one of the most active volcanoes in South America. It lies beyond the street map itself, but it shapes everything about the place, from the views to the way the lakeside streets face the water. The town was first founded by the Spanish in 1552, later lost, and re-established in the late nineteenth century, so much of its current layout dates from that later period. Along the shore, beaches and parkland leave open space between the water and the blocks, and the resort town of Pucón lies at the far end of the lake.
