Ville-Marie is the borough that holds the centre of Montreal. On a map it stretches from the St. Lawrence River up to the slopes of Mount Royal. At the bottom lies Old Montreal, with its narrow, irregular streets from the French colonial period and the Old Port along the water. Above it, the downtown grid of long east–west streets climbs toward the mountain.
The name recalls Ville-Marie, the settlement founded here in 1642 that became Montreal. The borough includes McGill University's campus against the mountain and the Lachine Canal's eastern entrance near the port. Beneath the downtown blocks runs much of the underground city, a network of pedestrian passages that no street map shows.
A Ville-Marie map poster frames the heart of the city by its two natural edges. In black and white, Mount Royal's park appears as a large open area with winding paths, the river as a broad clean line, and between them the dense, tilted grid of downtown.

The park on the mountain forms a broad open shape at the top of the map. Its winding paths contrast with the straight streets below.

The St. Lawrence, the Old Port quays and the entrance to the Lachine Canal give the map a strong lower edge.
