Vlotho lies on the Weser in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, where the river passes through the hills of the Weserbergland. From above, the Weser is the dominant line. It crosses the sheet in a broad band, and the town's streets gather on its bank before climbing into the surrounding high ground. A single bridge links the two sides.
A castle hill rises above the town, where the ruins of the medieval fortress still stand. The town grew as a river crossing and small trading place between Westphalia and Lippe. Its compact centre still sits close to the water, with the newer residential districts spreading onto the slopes and side valleys behind it.
