Volksrust lies on the high grassland of southern Mpumalanga, close to the border with KwaZulu-Natal. Its centre is a regular grid of streets and square blocks, a layout typical of South African towns founded in the nineteenth century. Around it the map opens onto wide, treeless veld, with the railway and main roads running through toward the coast and the interior.
The town was founded in the late 1880s, and its name means roughly the people's rest. It stands a short distance from Majuba Hill, where Boer forces defeated a British column in 1881, and from Laing's Nek, the pass over the escarpment. These landmarks give the area a significant place in South African history.
