Votuporanga is in the northwest of São Paulo state, in the rolling farming country of the western plateau. Like many towns founded in this region during the twentieth century, it was laid out on a regular plan: the centre is a tidy chequerboard of square blocks, and newer neighbourhoods continue the pattern outward with some variation.
The town was founded in the late 1930s as agricultural settlement pushed west across the state. Today it serves as a regional centre for the surrounding farmland, and it is linked by highway to São José do Rio Preto and the rest of the interior.
