Walton-on-the-Naze sits at the northern end of the Tendring coast, where the land runs out into the Naze, a low headland of soft cliffs facing the North Sea. On a map the town has water on two sides. To the east are the straight lines of the beach and promenade. To the north and west, the creeks and islands of Hamford Water spread out in an intricate pattern.
Two structures stand out. The pier, one of the longest in Britain, runs a thin line far out from the seafront. On the headland, the Naze Tower, built in the early eighteenth century as a landmark for shipping, still stands above the cliffs. The cliffs are eroding steadily and are well known for the fossils that wash out of the clay and red crag.
Hamford Water is a nature reserve of mudflats and saltings, and it inspired Arthur Ransome's novel Secret Water. A Walton-on-the-Naze map poster shows how different the town's two edges are. On one side is an orderly Victorian seafront. On the other is a tidal maze of channels that looks almost abstract when drawn in black and white.

The town ends in a green headland of soft, eroding cliffs, topped by the eighteenth-century Naze Tower and edged by open grassland along the cliff top.
Hamford Water
Behind the town lies a wide tidal inlet of creeks, mudflats and low islands. Its branching channels, in a protected landscape, make a striking and intricate pattern on the map.
