Waterdown is a community within the city of Hamilton, Ontario, set on top of the Niagara Escarpment north of Burlington Bay. The escarpment is its defining feature. From above, the town sits on the upland plain, while the ground drops sharply to the south and east. Grindstone Creek flows through the area and cuts a wooded ravine down the slope.
Waterdown began as a mill village, using the creek's fall over the escarpment to power its mills, and the old village core still sits near the ravine. Since then, the town has grown a great deal, with new subdivisions of winding streets spreading north and east across former farmland. The contrast between old and new is easy to see on the map.
