Weißenburg in Bayern lies in Middle Franconia on the Swabian Rezat, a small river that flows through the valley below the Franconian Jura. From above, the old town is an oval of narrow lanes and closely packed plots, still largely enclosed by its medieval wall, with newer districts spreading out along the valley roads.
The town is known for two quite different pasts. It was a free imperial city for centuries, which explains the scale of its walls and gates, and before that it was a Roman frontier post on the Raetian Limes. The remains of the fort of Biriciana and a Roman bath complex have been excavated here, and a large Roman treasure found in 1979 is one of the best-known finds in Germany.
