Wenquan lies in eastern Inner Mongolia, in the hill country of the Greater Khingan range not far from the border with Mongolia. The name means hot spring in Chinese, and this part of the range is known for its mineral springs. From above, the town follows a river valley, with streets strung along the valley floor rather than spread in a wide grid.
The surroundings give the map its character. Forest and low mountains press in from both sides, leaving long, narrow bands of flat land for roads, housing and a railway. Winters here are long and cold. The settlement pattern is that of a place that grew in a sheltered valley rather than on open steppe.
