Wensu is the seat of Wensu County in Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang, on the northern edge of the Tarim Basin. The Tian Shan rises to the north, and meltwater streams coming down from the mountains feed the oasis around the town. From above, the settlement appears as a compact grid enclosed by a broad green belt of irrigated farmland.
The layout is typical of oasis towns in the region. Straight avenues form the centre, while tree-lined roads and irrigation canals reach outward, dividing the fields into long parcels. Beyond the cultivated area, the landscape turns abruptly into gravel plain and desert, so the map has a clear boundary between watered land and dry ground.
