Werdau lies in western Saxony, near Zwickau, on the Pleiße River. The town grew as a centre of textile manufacturing, and its layout reflects that history, with factories along the river and workers' housing climbing the valley sides. On a map, the river runs through the town, and the streets branch off it and up the slopes.
The historic centre is small, with a market square and a few old streets. Around it, the industrial era left a dense pattern of blocks and larger buildings. Newer housing and green spaces fill the outer areas, and fields and woods surround the town beyond.
