Wiesbaden, the capital of Hesse, lies where the southern slopes of the Taunus run down to the Rhine. Its hot springs have drawn visitors since Roman times, and the city grew in the nineteenth century as one of Europe's fashionable spa resorts. That era shaped much of what you see from above: wide avenues, villa quarters and large, carefully planned green spaces.
The core is the so-called Historic Pentagon, a five-sided arrangement of streets around the old town, with the Kurhaus and its park to the east. Beyond it, a ring of boulevards encircles the centre, and further out the grid loosens into leafy residential streets climbing toward the hills. To the north, the Neroberg rises above the city, reached by a water-powered funicular railway.
Southward, the city reaches the Rhine at Biebrich, where a baroque palace faces the river. Ring and avenues
A ring of boulevards encloses the inner districts, and Wilhelmstraße runs along the park side of the centre, giving the plan its clear, spacious nineteenth-century structure.
Rhine at Biebrich
At the southern edge the streets meet the Rhine, with Biebrich Palace on the riverbank. The broad band of water gives the composition a strong horizontal anchor.
