Wik’ro, often spelled Wukro, lies on the Tigray plateau north of Mekelle, on the main road toward Adigrat. The town stretches along the highway, with the densest streets near the road and a looser grid of houses and compounds spreading outward. Around it, the land is open and rocky, cut by dry river beds and farm terraces.
The area is known for its rock-hewn churches. One of them, Wukro Chirkos, stands close to the town and was carved out of the sandstone rock, and there are more in the surrounding hills and cliffs. These sites have made Wik’ro a starting point for people exploring the churches of eastern Tigray.
