Wilmington is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, about fifteen miles north of Boston. Its map is typical of suburban New England: no strict grid, but curving roads, cul-de-sacs and older routes that follow the lines of former farm tracks. Interstate 93 cuts through the town as a strong diagonal, and the commuter railway to Lowell runs along its own path.
The town is known as the origin of the Baldwin apple, which was found here in the eighteenth century and became one of the most widely grown apples in New England. Water features appear across the plan, including Silver Lake and the headwaters of the Ipswich River, alongside woodland and wetland areas.
