Windsor Map Poster
Windsor occupies the southern bank of the Detroit River, and the curious result is that this Canadian city lies directly south of Detroit. On the map the river forms a clean, slightly bending edge along the top, and the downtown grid meets it with a ribbon of waterfront parks. Ouellette Avenue runs straight inland from the water, the spine around which the older centre is arranged.
Further out, the grid loosens into long parallel streets that echo the narrow farm lots laid out during French settlement, when each property needed a share of river frontage. To the east the city reaches toward Lake St. Clair. To the west, the older district of Sandwich sits near the foot of the Ambassador Bridge, one of the busiest border crossings in North America.
Much of that traffic serves the automotive industry, which has defined Windsor for more than a century. The Detroit–Windsor Tunnel runs beneath the river close to downtown, invisible on paper but part of daily life. West of downtown, the long span of the Ambassador Bridge leaps across the river from the Sandwich area. It is one of the most heavily used international crossings on the continent.
Riverfront parkland
A continuous strip of green lines the water beside downtown, where paths and lawns have replaced older industrial uses along the shoreline.
