Wujian lies in the western part of Chongqing municipality, in the hilly terrain of the eastern Sichuan Basin. The countryside here is folded into low hills and shallow valleys, and the town follows that shape. From above, streets bend around rises, and the built area stretches along the roads that pass through, rather than spreading out in a regular grid.
The land surrounding the town is intensively farmed, with fields and terraces fitted into the slopes and small ponds and watercourses in the lower ground. Rural roads wind between hamlets and farmhouses. The mix of a compact town centre and a finely divided agricultural landscape gives the map an intricate texture.
