Wuzhong lies in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, on the Yellow River as it flows north across the Ningxia plain. The land here is dry, and the city's surroundings are shaped by irrigation. From above, the urban core of Litong district appears within a network of canals and green fields drawn from the river, with arid country beyond the watered land.
Irrigation along this stretch of the Yellow River has a long history, and canals in the region have been maintained and rebuilt over many centuries. Upstream, the river passes through the Qingtongxia gorge, where a dam regulates water for the plain. A Wuzhong map poster frames the city streets against that river and its farmland, which is the essential story of the place.
The city is part of the Hui Muslim heartland of northwest China, and its mosques and food traditions reflect that heritage.
