Xiaochangshan is an island town in the Changshan archipelago, a group of islands in the Yellow Sea administered from Dalian in Liaoning province. It lies off the southeastern coast of the Liaodong Peninsula. On a map the island's outline, with its bays and rocky points, frames everything else.
Settlements on the island gather around its sheltered bays, where harbours and fishing boats find protection from the open sea. Roads link the villages across the island's hilly interior. The surrounding waters are used for fishing and aquaculture, which has long been the basis of island life here, and neighbouring islands of the archipelago appear nearby in the sea.
