Yāfā Map Poster
Yāfā, also known as Yafa an-Naseriyye or Yafia, is an Arab town in Israel's Northern District. It sits directly beside Nazareth on its southwestern side, and on a map the two built-up areas run together along the Nazareth hills. The streets follow the contours of the slope rather than a grid, curving and doubling back as the ground falls away.
The town is commonly identified with ancient Japhia, a Galilean village mentioned by the historian Josephus. Today the map shows dense housing on the hillsides, a few main roads connecting it to Nazareth and the wider region, and the flat fields of the Jezreel Valley starting at the foot of the hills to the south.
A Yāfā map poster brings out the contrast between these two kinds of land. The upper half is a tangle of short, curving streets shaped by the hills. Lower down the pattern loosens and gives way to the open valley. In black and white, the relief shows up through the street layout alone, without any shading.
