This Yantai is a town in the east of Chongqing Municipality, far inland and quite different from the better-known coastal city of the same name in Shandong. It lies in the ridge-and-valley country of the eastern Sichuan Basin, where long, parallel mountain ranges run from northeast to southwest and farmland fills the broad troughs between them.
From above, the town is a compact knot of streets, with the main roads following the grain of the landscape and smaller lanes branching toward the slopes. Terraced fields, ponds and scattered hamlets fill the surrounding area, and on a print the lines of roads and paths can seem to lean in the same direction as the ridges around them.
