Yasu lies on the south-eastern side of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. From above, the city spreads across a broad, flat plain that slopes gently toward the lake. Rice fields break the built-up areas into patches, and the shoreline forms a long, soft edge along the north-western side of the map.
The Yasu River, one of the larger rivers flowing into Lake Biwa, crosses the plain on its way to the lake, its embanked channel cutting a clear diagonal through the fields. To the south rises Mount Mikami, a symmetrical peak often called the Fuji of Omi, which gives the otherwise level landscape a single strong point of reference.
The area is also known for archaeology: a large number of dotaku, ancient bronze bells, have been found in the hills here. A Yasu map poster brings together these layers, the lake, the river, the mountain and the patchwork of neighbourhoods and fields between them.
