Yichun in northern Heilongjiang is surrounded by the Lesser Khingan mountains, and the landscape sets its shape. The town was built along a river valley, so the map shows a long, narrow belt of streets. Wooded slopes close in on both sides. Roads and blocks bend with the water rather than following a strict grid.
The city grew around forestry, and it is widely known as one of China's forest cities. On a map the forest itself shows as empty space. It surrounds the built-up area and presses in wherever the valley narrows. Bridges cross the river at intervals, joining the two banks.
A Yichun map poster is mostly about a line: a river, with a town laid along it and hills rising behind.
