Yonago lies in the far west of Tottori prefecture, on the shore of Lake Nakaumi, a large brackish lagoon connected to the Sea of Japan. From above, the old centre gathers near the lagoon's southern edge, while the Yumigahama Peninsula, a long curved sandbar, stretches north-west along the coast and separates the lagoon from the open sea. East of the city, the land climbs toward Mount Daisen.
Yonago developed as a castle town and later as a commercial centre for the San'in coast, and the stone foundations of Yonago Castle still stand on a small hill near the waterfront. Along the coast north of the centre lies Kaike Onsen, a hot spring resort facing the sea, while Yonago Airport sits toward the far end of the Yumigahama Peninsula.

Castle hill
Near the waterfront, a small hill holds the stone walls of Yonago Castle, and the older streets of the town gather around it in a tight, irregular pattern.
