Yoqne‘am ‘Illit sits where the eastern slopes of Mount Carmel meet the Jezreel Valley in northern Israel. The town was established in the 1950s and has grown in stages up the hillside, so its streets follow contour lines rather than a grid, curving in terraced arcs around the slope. From above, the result is a series of layered bands, with the flat valley opening out below.
Close by stands Tel Yokneam, an ancient mound mentioned in biblical sources, which gives the place its name. The modern town is better known for its technology parks, which host research centres and international companies and have earned it a reputation as one of Israel's high-tech hubs outside the major cities. Business zones appear on the map as larger, regular blocks at the foot of the hill.
