Zawiercie lies in the Silesian Voivodeship, on the edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, a limestone plateau known as the Polish Jura. On a map the town has a clear structure: a central area of regular streets, industrial districts, and residential estates spreading outward, with the main railway line running through it.
The town developed quickly in the nineteenth century around textile and metal industries, drawn by its position on the railway linking Warsaw and Vienna. The Warta river rises in the Kromołów district, and the Trail of the Eagles' Nests, with castles such as Ogrodzieniec, runs through the surrounding hills.
