Zhangfeng sits in the far west of Yunnan, in Longchuan County of the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, only a short distance from the border with Myanmar. On a map the town is a tight cluster of streets laid on level ground, with open farmland around it and ridges rising in the distance. The contrast between the dense centre and the empty valley around it is what defines its outline.
A Zhangfeng map poster turns that contrast into a simple study in black and white. The main roads run fairly straight across the basin floor, and smaller lanes fill the blocks between them. Toward the edges the grid loosens into scattered buildings and field tracks, then gives way to the plain. Zhangfeng is the seat of Longchuan County and is known for its border crossing, which makes it a point of trade between China and Myanmar. A main road runs from the centre toward the nearby crossing with Myanmar, one of the few long, uninterrupted lines on the map and a reminder of the town's role in trade.
