Zhangjiajie in northwestern Hunan is a city defined by its setting. The urban centre occupies a valley along the Li River, with streets packed onto the flat ground by the water and roads climbing into the surrounding mountains. From above, the city is a narrow ribbon of development threaded between steep slopes.
The city is known worldwide as the gateway to Wulingyuan, the landscape of towering sandstone pillars that was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Just south of the centre rises Tianmen Mountain, reached by one of the longest cable car rides in the world and famous for the natural arch in its cliff face.
