Zhenjiang lies on the southern bank of the Yangtze, and on a map the river is the dominant shape, broad and sweeping, with islands and sandbanks in midstream. The city stretches along the water rather than away from it. This is also where the Grand Canal crosses the Yangtze, a meeting point that gave the city its long importance for trade between north and south.
Three hills punctuate the riverfront: Jinshan, Jiaoshan and Beigu. Jinshan, once an island, is now joined to the land and crowned by a temple tied to the Legend of the White Snake. Jiaoshan still stands in the river, a green island reached by boat. Between them, the old ferry quarter keeps a web of narrow lanes near the former landing.
A Zhenjiang map poster shows a city shaped by water on two fronts, with the canal threading south and the great river running east. The street pattern loosens toward the south, where hills and lakes break up the blocks. The city is also known across China for its dark, aged vinegar.
