Zhong’ao is a town in the western part of Chongqing municipality, in the hilly country of the Sichuan Basin. The land is broken into many small hills and valleys, and almost every slope is farmed. The town itself occupies a stretch of lower ground, with its streets following the land instead of a planned grid.
Around the town, the map shows the typical landscape of this part of China. Terraced fields follow the contours, small reservoirs and ponds fill the valleys, and country roads wind between the hamlets. The main streets of the town are lined with shops and apartment buildings, and they gradually thin out into this agricultural landscape.
A Zhong’ao map poster has an organic, textured quality. The curves of the roads and terraces fill the frame, water appears as scattered solid shapes, and the town forms a denser cluster in the middle.
