Zhubei is the seat of Hsinchu County in northwestern Taiwan, on the north bank of the Touqian River directly across from Hsinchu City. Over the past few decades it has grown quickly as a home for engineers and families connected to the Hsinchu Science Park, one of the centres of the global semiconductor industry. The map shows that growth plainly.
Near the original town the lanes are narrow and irregular, while the newer districts are laid out in broad, orderly grids of apartment towers and wide roads. To the east, the Taiwan High Speed Rail Hsinchu station and the planned district around it add another clean geometric block. To the west the land runs out toward the coast of the Taiwan Strait.
