Zhujiajiao lies in Qingpu District on the western side of Shanghai, close to Dianshan Lake. It is one of the best-preserved water towns in the Yangtze delta, and from above its old core is unmistakable. Narrow canals branch through the town, lined on both sides by tightly packed houses and stone lanes, and small bridges cross them again and again.
The most famous crossing is the Fangsheng Bridge, a five-arched stone bridge from the Ming dynasty and one of the largest of its kind in the Shanghai area. Around the historic centre, newer streets and housing follow a wider, more regular layout. The map therefore shows two scales at once: the fine, winding waterside lanes and the broader modern blocks around them.
