Aberdare Map Poster & Print
Aberdare lies at the head of the Cynon Valley in Rhondda Cynon Taf. It grew during the nineteenth century when coal mining and ironworks transformed the valleys of South Wales. The town's shape comes from the valley itself. The river, the railway and the main roads run along the valley floor, and the streets climb the slopes on either side.
The terraced streets of Aberdare are its most distinctive feature on the map. Long rows of houses follow the contour lines, so they form curved parallel strokes across the hillsides. Aberdare Park, a Victorian public park with a lake, appears as a green space near the centre, and the Dare Valley Country Park opens up on the western side.
Aberdare also has a strong place in Welsh culture and hosted the National Eisteddfod. An Aberdare map poster shows the typical structure of a valleys town. There is a narrow band of development along the river, terraces that ripple up the slopes, and open moorland at the top edge of the frame. It is a striking, strongly directional design.
