Acireale Map Poster & Print
Acireale lies on the east coast of Sicily, north of Catania, on a series of lava terraces that drop steeply to the Ionian Sea. From above, the town is compact and slightly elongated. A dense historic centre sits back from the cliffs, streets climb toward the lower slopes of Etna, and small coastal villages line the shore below the escarpment known as the Timpa.
Much of the centre was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, which is why its churches and palazzi share a Baroque character around the cathedral square. Acireale is also known for one of the most celebrated carnivals in Sicily, with elaborate allegorical floats. Its thermal baths are fed by sulphurous springs that have been used since antiquity.
