'Ākra Map Poster
'Ākra, also written Akre or Aqrah, lies in the mountains of northern Iraq. From above it is one of the most distinctive towns in the region: houses rise in tight rows up a steep slope, and the streets follow the contours rather than any grid. Below, the newer town spreads across flatter ground, and the mountain behind closes the view like a wall.
The old quarter's terraced houses, climbing one above another, give the town its reputation as one of the most picturesque in Kurdistan. 'Ākra is also known for its Newroz celebrations, when residents carry torches up the mountainside and light fires on the slopes to mark the spring new year. The event has become one of the best-known Newroz gatherings in the region.
