Al-'Alūaṣ lies in the Al Marqab district of northwestern Libya, on the coastal plain between Tripoli and Khoms. From above, the area looks less like a dense town and more like a spread of settlement. Houses and compounds line roads that cross a landscape of farms, olive groves and open ground, with the Mediterranean shore a short distance to the north.
The coastal highway that links Tripoli to the eastern cities runs through this part of the country and forms the strongest line on the map. Al Marqab district is also home to Leptis Magna, one of the best-preserved Roman cities of the Mediterranean, near Khoms. Around Al-'Alūaṣ, farm tracks divide the land into long, irregular plots.
