Alcantarilla lies just west of Murcia city on the flat, fertile plain of the Segura river, known as the huerta. The town is dense and compact, with a busy centre and newer districts spreading outward. The motorway and railway run along its edges. Beyond them, the land breaks into small plots fed by irrigation channels, some of them centuries old.
Those channels are the town's best-known feature. Alcantarilla is home to a large historic water wheel that lifts water from an irrigation channel onto higher ground. Next to it stands a museum dedicated to the traditional life of the Murcian huerta. The town is also the site of a Spanish air force base, where the military parachute school is based.
