Annonay Map Poster & Print
Annonay is in the north of the Ardèche department, where the Cance and Deûme rivers meet in narrow valleys. The terrain decides the town's shape. The old centre fits into the space between the two rivers, with steep streets, stairways and bridges linking levels, while newer neighbourhoods spread over the surrounding slopes and plateaus.
The town has a notable place in the history of flight. In June 1783, Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier, sons of a local papermaking family, launched the first public demonstration of their hot-air balloon here. Annonay was also the home of the engineer Marc Seguin, known for his work on wire suspension bridges. Paper and leather tanneries long drove the local economy.
