Araçuaí sits in the Jequitinhonha Valley of northeastern Minas Gerais, beside the river that shares its name and not far from where it joins the Jequitinhonha. On a map the river is the defining line, and the town's streets spread across the gentler ground above its banks.
The layout shows a historic core near the water and newer neighbourhoods climbing into the surrounding hills, where the grid loosens and roads start following the contours. Beyond the edge of town the land is dry and rolling, crossed by a few roads that link it to other valley towns.
