Āsmār lies in Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan, in the valley of the Kunar River. On a map the defining element is the terrain: the river runs through a narrow corridor with mountains rising sharply on both sides, and the settlement follows the flat land along the water. Roads keep close to the valley floor, and the built area thins quickly as the slopes steepen.
