Bacheli is in the Dantewada district of southern Chhattisgarh, at the foot of the Bailadila range. These hills hold some of India's richest iron ore deposits, and the town grew up largely as a township for the mines run by the National Mineral Development Corporation. Its layout reflects that origin.
On a map, Bacheli has a clearly planned character. Residential sectors have regular streets and quarters, public buildings are grouped together, and roads lead up toward the mining areas on the ridges. Around the town, the ground rises steeply into forested hills, and the street network stops where the slopes begin.
