Balta Map Poster & Print
Balta lies in the north of Odesa oblast, in the rolling farmland of southwestern Ukraine. The small Kodyma river runs through the town, and the map shows streets spread across both banks, climbing the gentle slopes of the valley. The layout mixes older, irregular lanes near the river with straighter blocks laid out in later periods.
Balta has a long history as a frontier town. The river once marked a border between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Ottoman-controlled lands, and settlements grew up on both sides. In the twentieth century, Balta served for several years as the first capital of the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, before the capital moved to Tiraspol.
Around the town, the map opens into wide fields divided by long, straight roads, typical of Ukraine's farming country.
