Barletta Map Poster & Print
Barletta faces the Adriatic on the northern coast of Apulia. The shoreline here is smooth and almost straight. On the map the town's key shapes cluster where land meets water: the harbour enclosed by long breakwaters, the large square Swabian castle beside it and the tight old town just behind.
Barletta is known for the Disfida di Barletta of 1503, a challenge fought between thirteen Italian and thirteen French knights, which is still commemorated in the town. Another landmark is the Colossus, a huge bronze statue of a late Roman emperor that stands in the street next to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre.
A Barletta map poster sets the dense, winding lanes of the historic centre against the more regular blocks of later expansion. Long beaches run out from the port to the east and west. The composition is simple and clear: a coastline, a harbour, a castle and a town growing out from them.
