Birsk Map Poster & Print
Birsk stands on the Belaya River in the north of Bashkortostan. It was founded in the seventeenth century as a fortified outpost and is one of the oldest towns in the republic. From above, the town reads as a regular grid of long streets laid over a terrace above the river, with the broad curve of the Belaya forming one of its edges.
The ordered street pattern follows the model of many Russian provincial towns, with long parallel streets crossed at regular intervals. Birsk is also a university town, home to a branch of Bashkir State University. Across the river, the floodplain is a very different landscape of meadows, side channels and old river loops, left without streets.
A Birsk map poster sets these two textures against each other: the tidy rectangles of the town on its terrace, and the loose, meandering shapes of the Belaya and its floodplain. The river gives the composition its movement and the grid gives it structure. In black and white, that balance makes for a calm, legible image.

Floodplain across the water
Opposite the town, the floodplain is traced with channels, meadows and former river loops. It adds soft, organic shapes that balance the geometry of the blocks.
