Bishops Stortford lies in eastern Hertfordshire, close to the Essex border, on the River Stort. The historic centre sits on rising ground beside the river, where a compact knot of old streets gathers around the market and St Michael's Church. From there, residential areas spread in every direction, with newer estates on the outer edges of the town.
The Stort was made navigable in the eighteenth century, and the Stort Navigation still runs south from the town toward the River Lea, lined by a towpath. Near the river, the mound of Waytemore Castle rises in Castle Gardens, a riverside park. The main railway line to London and Cambridge runs through the valley close by.
The town is known as the birthplace of Cecil Rhodes, and London Stansted Airport lies just to the north-east.
