Bramsche lies north of Osnabrück on open, gently rolling land, and the map is shaped by two waterways. The river Hase winds through the town from south to north in a natural, irregular course, while the Mittelland Canal cuts across the area in a firm, engineered line, with a harbour serving local industry.
The town centre is compact, with a handful of streets meeting near the old church and the market area, and residential districts spread outward in a mix of older lanes and post-war estates. Several villages that belong to Bramsche sit apart in the countryside, each a small cluster in a landscape of fields and woodland.
One of those districts, Kalkriese, is known as the likely site of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD, where the Varusschlacht museum and park now stand.
