Bridgwater Map Poster & Print
Bridgwater stands on the River Parrett in Somerset, at the point where the river could once be crossed and was still navigable from the sea. On the map, the Parrett winds through the middle of town in a tight, muddy curve, and the old centre gathers around the crossing, with Georgian streets such as Castle Street close by.
The town was an important port, and its docks connect to the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal, which leaves the town as a straight line heading south-west. Beyond the edges lie the Somerset Levels, flat and crossed by drainage channels. The Battle of Sedgemoor, the last battle fought on English soil in 1685, took place on the moor just outside the town.
