Brilon Map Poster
Brilon sits on a limestone plateau in the Hochsauerland, higher than most towns in North Rhine-Westphalia. From above, its core is easy to pick out: a tight knot of streets around the market square and the Propsteikirche, with roads leaving in every direction toward the surrounding villages. Beyond the houses the pattern changes quickly into field boundaries, patches of woodland and the pale, sharp-edged shapes of quarries cut into the rock.
The town calls itself a forest town with good reason. Brilon owns an unusually large municipal forest, and on a map it shows up as a broad, quiet mass wrapping around much of the settlement, crossed by a thin web of forest tracks. The contrast between the dense centre and these open, lightly drawn surroundings gives the sheet its character.
History adds a second layer. Brilon was a member of the Hanseatic League, and the old town still follows a medieval outline rather than a planned grid.
