Broxburn Map Poster & Print
Broxburn is in West Lothian, a short distance west of Edinburgh. From above, the town stretches along a main road, and the Union Canal runs along its southern side in a slow curve. Newer housing estates with curving closes surround the older main street and the terraced rows.
The town grew quickly in the nineteenth century with the Scottish shale oil industry, which the chemist James Young helped pioneer in West Lothian. The waste from that industry remains as bings, large reddish spoil heaps that still mark the landscape around Broxburn and are now partly grassed over.
On the map, the canal's line, the grid of older streets and the looser loops of the modern estates show different periods of the town's growth. A Broxburn map poster brings those layers together, with the bings visible as distinct shapes at the edges.
