Câmpina lies in Prahova County, Romania, on a raised terrace between two rivers, the Prahova to the west and the Doftana to the east. The Prahova Valley corridor, the main route from Bucharest to Brașov, runs past the town. On the map, streets stretch along the terrace in an elongated north–south shape, with slopes dropping toward both valleys.
From the late nineteenth century the town became a centre of Romania's oil industry, and refineries and workers' districts left their mark on its layout. Câmpina is also known for the Iulia Hasdeu Castle, an unusual building raised by the scholar Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu in memory of his daughter, and for the memorial house of the painter Nicolae Grigorescu.
