Carmona Map Poster & Print
Carmona sits on a long ridge rising above the flat farmland of the Vega, east of Seville. On a map, the old town occupies the high ground as a dense tangle of narrow, winding streets inside the line of its historic walls. Below and to the west, newer neighbourhoods spread onto the lower ground, and roads fan out across the plain.
This is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Spain, and its layers show clearly. The Puerta de Sevilla, a fortified gate with Roman and Moorish work, guards the western entry, and the ruins of the Alcázar del Rey Don Pedro crown the eastern end of the ridge. Outside town, a large Roman necropolis has been excavated.
